12 Ways to Ease into Spring Wellness

unspecified-15-682x1024by Stefani Ellenbecker –  Spring is upon is in a big way, and naturally, with the change of seasons, we are all looking to spruce up our body, mind, home and heart. Sometimes it’s not about the big changes but more about the little ways we can implement wellness into our everyday lifestyle that really makes the long-lasting difference. I asked several W&D contributors how they plan to get into a wellness groove this April and they shared a few simple ways they are clearing out their head space, exercising more, eating healthier and getting outdoors to grab some fresh air. We hope this post motivates you and gives a few pointers on how to improve your health this spring. We would love to hear in the comments below what your wellness plans are as the weather warms up!

Bridget Borden, Studio 125 Manager: “I’m trying to incorporate wellness into my daily routine – I drink a mix of hot water, apple cider vinegar and lemon in the morning, matcha green tea throughout the day and hot water with Reishi in the evenings.  Also, I love my barre classes and am full into any challenges they offer.”

Colleen Eversman of  2ndTruth: “I’ve been going to The Firm and spinning at least twice a week + going to yoga in-between. I’ve also been trying to eat less bread and dairy (I did the Whole 30 and discovered that bread and dairy make me super bloated). Drinking at least my body weight in ounces of water – it turns out, staying well hydrated helps my skin not freak out. And, being outside with Ellie (my pup) to run her for at least 30 mins a day. FRESH LINENS

Send all of your linens (napkins, table runners, even a fancy apron for the chef) out to be dry cleaned so they’re pressed and ready for the big day.

MISMATCH YOUR TABLEWARE

Not everyone has enough matching glasses, silverware and plates for 20 plus people, so don’t hesitate to mix-and-match what you have. Keeping it all in the same color family will give your table an eclectic, but coordinated look.

USE CANDLES

Use a lot of them. Everywhere. No, you’re not trying to seduce your house guests, but the warm glow of (UNSCENTED!) candles is much more welcoming than overhead lights. Candlesticks are festive, but short pillar candles or votives won’t block the person dining across from you.

When family and friends arrive for longer stays, you’ll need a few extra supplies—especially if the spares you keep in the back of the linen closet are worn, or not sturdy enough for pint-sized guests. Keeping a few key comforts on hand will give your guests the independence to make themselves at home.

We’ve collected some of our favorite bed, bath, and kitchen gear to help you anticipate common houseguest needs and make your home feel more inviting. Our picks reflect hundreds of hours of research and testing, and we’ve focused primarily on budget-friendly options. You probably don’t need everything on this list, but covering the basics will allow you and your guests to focus on what matters: spending time together.

THE ELEMENTS OF BRUNCH

berries-quicheOr How to make a fabulous brunch. The holiday season is upon us and those waffles aren’t going to make themselves. Here are some tips for making a great brunch from Yellow Table. 

1) Don’t try and do everything. If you’re hosting, you’re already having to clean your place, set the table, and at least buy some of the food. Let other people help out in other ways!! If you have a friend who loves to do flowers (or even better has a garden), let them bring the flowers. Tell everyone to bring a bottle of sparkling wine, or some OJ or coffee. Let people help out by bringing a dish, or picking up croissants or fruit.

2) Make some sort of main course and keep the rest of the food extremely simple. I also try to have something savory, something sweet, some sort of fruit, and some sort of salad. For this brunch, I decided to make a couple of crustless quiches for the main course and kept everything else super-easy: I bought some croissants, tossed together an arugula salad (with apples and watermelon radishes), and put out a bowl of berries. I also made a strawberry-rhubarb compote to go with the croissants, which took about 10 minutes to make and was a nice homemade touch.

3) Make a fresh-squeezed mimosa bar. This is SO easy and is a really nice touch. Before guests arrive, squeeze some oranges (I love Cara Cara or blood oranges) and/or grapefruit juice, pour into pretty little pitchers, and set out beside chilled bottles of bubbly. People can just make their own mimosas, which leaves you free to finish the food or talk to everyone as they arrive. And have at least a little something to nibble on when guests arrive, even if it’s just some olives or nuts or crostini.

4) Make a bunch of little flower arragements from one bigger bunch of flowers. I was lucky to have my friend Jenn‘s help with flowers – she just bought a few bunches of lilac, cut them into smaller bundles (which she tied with butchers’ twine) and stuck them in some little pitchers and vases I had. Then she tucked a few sprigs in bud vases. This is such a simple, affordable way to create pretty flower arrangements on the table! The key is to keep things low so people can still see each other over the flowers.
