via NJ.com – Produce market vouchers — good for the Bayonne farmers’ market and other select locations — are available for low-income seniors through the city’s Office on Aging, city officials announced.
The Bayonne farmers’ market is held on Tuesdays through Oct. 25, 2016, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Fitzpatrick Park, located on Avenue C between 26th and 27th streets. The Office On Aging will indicate the locations of other approved farmers’ markets to the voucher recipients.
The program is targeted for residents 60 and older whose income level is at or below 185 percent of the federally defined poverty level.
Interested seniors can apply for the vouchers at the Office On Aging in Room 17 of City Hall between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Mondays and Fridays only, starting on Monday, July 11. Applications will be accepted until all vouchers have been distributed.
Applicants must have valid identification for Bayonne residency and proof of age and income. They can prove their qualifying income status in one of two ways:
— Those on Medicaid can show a Medicaid card.
— Those not on Medicaid must provide physical proof of income with appropriate documentation.
Qualified seniors will each receive five $5 vouchers to be used for the purchase of fresh, locally-grown New Jersey fruits and vegetables from farmers who participate in the program. Some consumer items, such as nuts, buttered corn, bakery products and pre-cooked and frozen dinners are not eligible for the voucher program, even if they are sold at farmers’ markets.
The voucher program is a joint venture with the New Jersey 5-A-Day Program, the state Department of Agriculture, the state Department of Health and Senior Services, and the Hudson County Office On Aging.
