This week Jonathan Lin interviewed Bayonne Mayor Jimmy Davis and city Business Administrator Joe DeMarco for Hudson County Newsmakers at NJ.com.

The interview focuses on achievements of the past 8 months including resolved development lawsuits and teacher’s contracts. They also discuss the challenges ahead:

Looming large in the wide-ranging discussion was the $24 million structural deficit inherited by the new administration, which Davis says he plans to tackle with “development and redevelopment.”

“In a seven-year period, we should be able to eat away at most of this $24 million,” he said.

A raise in the city’s taxes will also figure into the equation for dealing with the deficit, DeMarco said, though a figure for the increase won’t be known until closer to April, when city officials expect to introduce the budget.

Fidelco Bayonne Realty LLC and Bayonne Bay Developers LLC are expected to proceed with residential developments on the MOT as their lawsuits against the city are put in the past, which would generate money for the city.

Davis said he’d like to eventually purchase parts of the MOT back from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. In 2010, the former administration sold part of the base to the bi-state agency, going back on a plan to transform the entire terminal into a residential community.

Residents’ Input Needed For Five-Year Community Development Plan

2015-02-25_14-11-04Mayor Jimmy Davis invited all Bayonne residents to participate in a survey on Community Development issues on the municipal website, www.bayonnenj.org.

The City of Bayonne is in the process of preparing a Five-Year Consolidated Plan for Community Development program years 2015-2019. These documents are required by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to distribute funds for the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and other federal programs. The Plan will describe the City’s housing and community development needs, strategies, and priorities. These documents affect neighborhoods and organizations across the community. Input from residents, city agencies, and service organizations is vital to identifying needs and allocating resources. For this reason, the City of Bayonne is asking individuals to complete this brief online survey as part of the planning process. You may respond from your home computer, or use a computer at the public library, a church, or a civic center. This will help the Community Development Office gather as much input as possible. It is important for the program to receive public input, in order to prepare a complete and accurate plan that reflects our City’s needs and priorities.

The results of the survey will be available for public review and comment and discussed at public hearings in March and April of 2015.
