Senior Discounts

c3286a6f51f84cfbvia NJ.com – Produce market vouchers — good for the Bayonne farmers’ market and other select locations — are available for low-income seniors through the city’s Office on Aging, city officials announced.

The Bayonne farmers’ market is held on Tuesdays through Oct. 25, 2016, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Fitzpatrick Park, located on Avenue C between 26th and 27th streets. The Office On Aging will indicate the locations of other approved farmers’ markets to the voucher recipients.

The program is targeted for residents 60 and older whose income level is at or below 185 percent of the federally defined poverty level.

Interested seniors can apply for the vouchers at the Office On Aging in Room 17 of City Hall between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Mondays and Fridays only, starting on Monday, July 11. Applications will be accepted until all vouchers have been distributed.

Applicants must have valid identification for Bayonne residency and proof of age and income. They can prove their qualifying income status in one of two ways:

— Those on Medicaid can show a Medicaid card.

— Those not on Medicaid must provide physical proof of income with appropriate documentation.

Qualified seniors will each receive five $5 vouchers to be used for the purchase of fresh, locally-grown New Jersey fruits and vegetables from farmers who participate in the program. Some consumer items, such as nuts, buttered corn, bakery products and pre-cooked and frozen dinners are not eligible for the voucher program, even if they are sold at farmers’ markets.

The voucher program is a joint venture with the New Jersey 5-A-Day Program, the state Department of Agriculture, the state Department of Health and Senior Services, and the Hudson County Office On Aging.

Bayonne Farmers’ Market has returned for its fifth season. Now open on Tuesdays from 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm.  It will run through October 25, 2016, rain or shine.  The market will take place at a new location this year, Fitzpatrick Park, which is located on Avenue C, between 26th and 27th Streets.  Fitzpatrick Park stands across the street from the south side of City Hall.

Mayor Davis said, “The Bayonne Farmers’ Market has become a popular feature of our community.  We welcome the 2016 Farmers’ Market to the City Hall neighborhood, which will provide a great central location for Bayonne shoppers.

Participants this year will include both new and returning Famers’ Market businesses. The Opening Day lineup of participants includes:  Lizzmonade, Baker’s Bounty (coming in June), The Empanada Lady, Paolo’s Kitchen, Just Delicious Kettle Corn, Dr. Pickle, Gourment Fruits and Nuts, Mike’s Bagel Chips, The Farmer and the Chick Pea (formerly City Girls), High Mountain Foods, Outer Limits Hot Sauce (joining in July), Pimento Grill (Caribbean Foods), JC Fish Stand, and Sparties Mobile Spa.

Last season, the Bayonne Farmers’ Market offered a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program with Ort Farms.  CSA allows city residents to have direct access to high quality, fresh produce grown locally by regional farmers. When you become a member of a CSA, you’re purchasing a “share” of vegetables. Weekly, from May until October, your farmer will deliver that share of produce to the Market for pick-up. CSA members pay for an entire season of produce upfront. This early bulk payment enables your farmer to plan for the season, purchase new seed, make equipment repairs, and more. Bayonne’s CSA was very successful last year and will be returning again this year.  The famers’ market CSA program is unique in that it is customizable, so customers only get the produce that they want each week.  Registration is ongoing.  The first date for CSA pick-up is May 31. The CSA program offers three options: full, half and personal shares.  CSA is a twenty-one week operation, from May 31 through October 25, with an assumption that. each customer has one week of vacation from the program.  Eggs or cheese can be added to your share.  Flexible payment plans are available.

More information and CSA applications can be found on the Bayonne Farmers’ Market Facebook page or at www.ortfarms.com.  The link to the Farmers’ Market Facebook page ishttps://www.facebook.com/BayonneFarmersMarket/.

The 2013 opening of the store was attended by none other than  the then New York Giants’ defensive end Justin Tuck and Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz. Kaufmann cited recent building and housing development as incentives to locate Sneaker Room in Bayonne.
