As reported by Tapinto.net, players, fans, and supporters began to gather in front of the Bayonne Community Museum at Broadway and 9th Street nearly two hours before the Buddy Baseball parade and first pitch of the season was set to kick off on Saturday.
Many were players involved in the program, as well as their parents. Many more were players from the Bayonne Little League and school sports programs. Finally, a significant number of people simply came out to support the program which this year is celebrating its 10th anniversary in Bayonne.
The parade included the Bayonne High School marching band and twirlers, numerous dressed up characters, the Bayonne Police Department honor guard, and scores of others. And this year, thanks to $2.4 million in county, state and federal grants, the parade concluded with opening day ceremonies at a brand-new rebuilt stadium.
The Bayonne Buddy Baseball program was brought forward by Amadeo, who had been approached by parents a decade ago for the city to provide a program to help special needs kids. Now the program accommodates more than 150 players.
